NY Public Service Commission–licensed ESCO
Buy Energy Direct
How it works

Switching supply,
without switching anything else.

An ESCO replaces the utility's default supply rate with a contracted supply rate from a competitive supplier. Your wires, pipes, meter, bill, and emergency response don't change. Only the supply line on your bill changes.

Plain English

Who does what,
line by line.

Buy Energy Direct is an Energy Service Company (ESCO). We supply your energy. Con Edison continues to deliver your energy and respond to emergencies.

Buy Energy Direct (Supplier)
  • · Provides the supply portion of your bill
  • · Sets your contracted rate structure
  • · Manages your supplier-side account
  • · Provides a dedicated NY-based account manager
Con Edison (Utility)
  • · Operates the wires and pipes
  • · Delivers electricity and gas to your meter
  • · Reads your meter and issues the bill
  • · Responds to outages, gas leaks, and emergencies
Switching

Four steps to a new supply contract.

  1. 01

    Tell us about your usage

Share a recent Con Edison bill or your account number. We size a plan to your real consumption — not a residential average.

  2. 02

We design a plan that fits

Fixed, variable, or index pricing — explained in plain English with the tradeoffs spelled out. You decide what's right for your operation.

  3. 03

    We notify Con Edison

We coordinate the supplier change with the utility. No equipment changes, no service interruption, no second bill to track.

  4. 04

    Same delivery, our supply

Con Edison still delivers and bills you. The supply line on that bill now reflects your contract with Buy Energy Direct.

Pricing structures, explained

Fixed, variable, index.
What each one actually does.

Three different ways to price the supply portion of your bill. None of them is universally cheaper or universally better — the right structure depends on your operating profile and your tolerance for month-to-month rate movement. Savings are not guaranteed under any structure.

Fixed

How it works

You and Buy Energy Direct agree on a single supply rate, expressed per kWh (electric) or per therm/Dth (gas). That rate stays in place for the entire Initial Term, except for a narrow regulatory pass-through provision spelled out in the contract.

When it fits

Useful when budget predictability matters more than chasing the absolute lowest market price. Common for businesses on tight forecasts or those locking in ahead of an expected market run-up.

What to know

If the market falls during your term, you continue to pay your fixed rate. If it rises, you continue to pay your fixed rate.

Variable

How it works

The supply rate may change month to month based on prevailing market conditions, within bounds and methodology disclosed at enrollment. Each month's rate is reflected on that month's bill.

When it fits

Useful for businesses comfortable with normal commodity-market movement and seeking flexibility without long-term commitment to a single rate.

What to know

Rates can rise as well as fall. The contract specifies what triggers changes and how they are calculated.

Index

How it works

The monthly supply rate is calculated from a published market index plus a stated adder. Both the index source and the adder are disclosed on the executed Customer Disclosure Statement at enrollment.

When it fits

Useful when you want a transparent, formula-driven price tied to a public benchmark, with the methodology fully visible up front.

What to know

You inherit the volatility of the underlying index. The adder remains fixed for the term unless the contract specifies otherwise.

Your bill

Same Con Edison bill.
One line changes.

Supply (changes)

The supply portion reflects your contract with Buy Energy Direct — commodity only, at the rate stated on your executed agreement. This is the only line that changes when you switch suppliers.

Delivery (unchanged)

The delivery portion continues to reflect Con Edison's tariffed delivery rates, taxes, surcharges, and any other utility-billed amounts. We do not bill these; Con Edison does.

One bill, one payment

You continue to receive a single consolidated bill from Con Edison. You make a single payment to the utility. Con Edison remits the supply portion to Buy Energy Direct under standard NY PSC consolidated-billing procedures.

End of term

What happens
at renewal.

Before your Initial Term ends, we send a renewal notice at least 30 and no more than 60 days before the renewal date. The notice describes the renewal terms.

You can renew, renegotiate, or move to month-to-month service. On month-to-month you can cancel at any time without charge by giving written notice or calling us.

If you ever decide to leave Buy Energy Direct entirely, we coordinate the return to Con Edison's default supply or to another supplier of your choice. There can be a transition period — the contract spells out the timing.
